b) Adequate medical supervision of the advanced practice nurse with prescribing authority is essential. The attending physician should regularly and regularly review the prescribed practices and models of the advanced practice nurse with prescriptive authority. Supervision involves appropriate referral, consultation and cooperation between the advanced practice nurse and the attending physician. (b) No prescription shall be issued to permit a licensed or otherwise authorized medical practitioner to obtain controlled hazardous substances for the purpose of storing or providing his or her office or medical bag for the purpose of general dispensing to patients. The results of the disciplinary hearing included one revocation for several cases of medical mismanagement and two voluntary submissions to the judiciary that imposed conditional sentences for personal drug abuse. Voluntary submission to the judiciary was adopted, which required six months, a mandatory assessment and five years of probation for sexual misconduct and violations of drug laws. One case continued with the agreement that the licensee would not prescribe controlled drugs until the matter had been heard by the Commission. (3) The attending physician shall be trained and fully qualified in the field of specialization of the advanced practice nurse. Nurses who practice in Oklahoma do not need to have medical supervision, but rather prescribe. Although Oklahoma technically allows NPs to diagnose patients independently, in practice, almost all nurses in the state work under the supervision of a doctor.
A cooperation agreement between an NP and a supervising physician is required for the NP to prescribe medications and other medical supplies. Okla. Nursing Practice Act § 567.3a (6) “Supervision implies that there is appropriate guidance, consultation and cooperation between the advanced practice nurse and the attending physician.” The laws that govern nurses in Oklahoma aren`t the worst in the country, but they certainly leave something to be desired. Oklahoma`s field of practice is so blatantly flawed that Governor Susan Martinez of neighboring New Mexico launched a marketing campaign targeting Oklahoma nurses in 2013. The objective of the campaign? Encourage Sooner State IPs to move to New Mexico, where the scope of the laws is more favorable. Nurses practicing in Oklahoma must obtain prescription authorization from the State Board of Nursing before prescribing medications. To obtain the prescribing authority, NPs must have a current license to practice as a nurse and have completed training contact hours or academic credit hours in pharmacology before applying. The number of contact hours and/or academic credit hours depends on whether the PI has already obtained prescription power in another state or whether he/she is applying for the initial prescription authorization.
Nurses who receive an initial certification must complete at least 45 hours of contact in pharmacology or three academic credits in the three years preceding the application. NPs who have already been granted the power to prescribe must complete 15 hours of contact or one hour of academic credit in the two years preceding the application. Advanced practice nurses are authorized by the Nursing Council to prescribe as Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioners, Clinical Specialist Nurses or Certified Nurse Midwives under the medical direction of a supervising physician. You have a prescription and can obtain an intermediate level DEA number to prescribe CDS, Schedules III, IV and V, limited to a seven-day supply. Nurses have an exclusion formula, a list of medications that they cannot prescribe. (See Figure 2) The name of the advanced practice nurse will appear on the prescription label. CAD 435:10-13-2. Eligibility for supervision by an advanced practice nurse with prescribing authority (4) No physician may simultaneously supervise more than two (2) equivalent full-time advanced practice nurses with respect to their prescribing powers. For the purposes of this section, each “full-time equivalent” position of advanced practice nurse is equivalent to forty (40) hours per week worked jointly by part-time advanced practice nurses supervised by the physician. Notwithstanding the above provisions on the supervision of two (2) equivalent full-time advanced practice nurses, no physician may supervise more than four (4) advanced practice nurses.
The Commission may, at the request of the physician, make an exception to a limit set herein. Supervision implies that there is appropriate transmission, consultation and cooperation between the advanced practice nurse and the attending physician. Oklahoma`s nursing laws aren`t the worst in the country, but they certainly leave something to be desired. The scope of practice for Oklahoma`s registered nurses is so inflated that Governor Susan Martinez of neighboring New Mexico launched a marketing campaign in 2013 targeting Oklahoma nurses. An advanced practice nurse who is recognized by the Oklahoma Board of Nursing as an advanced registered nurse and who is subject to the direction of the physician of a supervising physician may prescribe and administer Schedule III-V controlled substances. St. § 63-2-312 (d) A practitioner may not distribute, distribute, sell, prescribe, prescribe or administer substances controlled in Schedules I to V for the personal use of the practitioner or a member of his immediate family. Provided that this paragraph does not apply to family members who are not part of the second degree of consanguinity or kinship. It is also provided that this paragraph does not apply to medical emergencies for which no other doctor is available to respond to the emergency. Medical supervision is required for Oklahoma nurses to prescribe.
The supervision agreement must be set out in a written agreement. The physician must be available for consultations, support or referrals of patients through direct contact, telephone or other means of communication, but is not required to be physically present at the NP. To prescribe controlled substances, nurses need an AED number. a) In order to act as a supervising physician for the advanced practice nurse with prescription authority, an allopathic physician must meet the following criteria: A physician`s first application to supervise more than two full-time equivalent advanced practice nurses with prescription authority was denied. “Surveillance implies that there is adequate transmission, consultation and cooperation between the advanced practice nurse and the attending physician .b) No prescription may be issued that allows a single authorized or authorized physician to obtain controlled hazardous substances in order to store or distribute his or her office or medical bag for the purpose of general dispensing to patients. Medical supervision is required for Oklahoma nurses to prescribe. The care agreement must be set out in a written agreement. The physician must be available for consultations, assistance or referral of patients through direct contact, telephone or other means of communication, but is not obliged to be physically present at the PI. To prescribe controlled substances, nurses must have an AED number.
Currently, a potential nurse must complete a program that either 1) has one of the three accreditations mentioned above or 2) meets Oklahoma`s mandates. To meet Oklahoma standards, a program must be based on or affiliated with the university and include theory and content. It must last at least one year and have measurable objectives in terms of the scope of the practice. However, as of January 1, 2016, the program must have or be a candidate for one of the approved national accreditations. A future nurse anesthetist will follow a program of study accredited by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs. a midwife, a midwifery training program accredited by the Accreditation Commission. (b) adequate medical supervision by the advanced nurse with mandatory authority is essential. The attending physician should regularly and regularly review the predictive practices and models of the advanced nurse with prescriptive authority. There are very parallel rules for the oversight of LPNs and physician assistants with normative authority. A notable difference is that this board has no notice or approval of the oversight agreement between physicians and THE APNs. Advanced practice nurses are regulated by the Oklahoma State Nursing Council and supervision agreements are issued by this group.
Our board regularly reviews the list of physicians who oversee this group of nurses. It is therefore the positive responsibility of the Director General who agrees to be the AFN supervisor to ensure that he or she complies with the rules (OAC 435:10-13-2). Failure to comply with and non-compliance with these requirements constitutes unprofessional behaviour. Oklahoma`s Nursing Practice Act also states that nurse practitioners must practice in a manner consistent with their specialty area of approval. For example, a pediatric NP is not eligible for adult care. PIs practicing in Oklahoma require national certification by a certification body. Famous for cowboys, tornadoes and oh yes, a timeless musical, Oklahoma has an all-American spirit. The Sooner State is the home of country singer Garth Brooks and the setting for the movie “Twister,” not to mention a key figure in the country frenzy of the 1800s. However, when it comes to nurses, the state lacks such an entrepreneurial spirit. .
